Like we’ve said from the start, there isn’t really a wrong way to play Race Across The World: The Experience.

After all, this is your race and your choices are what matters. As long as you don’t use public transport, send the correct answers and get to each checkpoint (however long it takes you!) you’ll reach the finish line!
However, if you’re looking to top the leaderboard when you complete the race, then you might want to keep reading.
We’ve gathered some intel from teams who recently completed the race to find out what they’d do differently (if anything), and we’ve come up with 6 “mistakes” to help you prepare for your own race. Ready to gain some wisdom?
Mistake 1: Not Checking Their Answers Before Hitting “Send”

Ah, the dreaded autocorrect feature is both a blessing and a curse (depending on your circumstances). For Race Across The World: The Experience, it’s better to err on the side of caution.
We know you want to type fast, but so does your phone. And while speed is important, giving the correct answer is actually more important.
Before you hit “send”, just make sure that what you’ve written was what you intended!
Mistake 2: Not Using Exclusive Race Discounts
Your race only really starts when you get to the start location (for London, that’s Liverpool Street Station, and for Manchester, that’s Stevenson Square).
When you arrive at either of these places, you’ll send “start” to commence your game. You’ll be sent the location of your first checkpoint, a venue where your team will collect your race pack(s).
But whatever you do, don’t buy a drink for the short walk to your start venue! There are discounts waiting at all three of your checkpoints ahead, and it’d be a real shame to miss out on them.
Just something to bear in mind!

Mistake 3: Not Keeping an Eye On Their Budget
Just like in the TV show, your budget matters in this race.
All teams start with £30 of virtual budget at the beginning of the race, and you have to spend it to “buy” directions. Cheaper directions are harder to interpret, while more expensive directions are easier to follow but diminish your budget quicker.
How you spend your budget is up to you, but remember, your score will depend on your race time and the health of your budget at the end of the race. So if you have time and you think you’re up for a challenge, send “work” to receive extra puzzles and earn more money!

Mistake 4: Rushing Through The Race
Some teams have a burning sense of competition that they just can’t extinguish, but even some of them have said that they would have liked to have spent more time exploring along the way.
Again, there really is no right or wrong way to complete the experience (“Your race, your pace!” is one of our mantras) but it’s worth thinking about.
If you finish the race and you’re still hungry for adventure, we’ve created lots of trails across 16 UK cities that might quench your thirst (and of course, there are now two Race Across The World Experiences to complete!).

Mistake 5: Not Setting Aside Enough Time
As we mentioned earlier, players reach three checkpoint venues across the race and when there, you get the option of staying a while and resting your feet.
If you’re worried about your stops eating into your race time, don’t! The timer pauses here so you’re free to spend as long as you like.
One of the questions we’re always asked is how long teams should expect the race to take, and we’re afraid we have a disappointing answer for you: it varies.
Not including break times, we’ve had teams complete the race in under an hour and other teams who’ve taken over three hours.
What we’d say is to expect to be out and about for at least 3 hours to be on the safe side!

Mistake 6: Running Out of Phone Battery
Last but not least, a major prep issue.
Race Across The World: The Experience uses WhatsApp to deliver cryptic directions to teams, and without it, you can’t complete the race.
Feel free to bring chargers or battery packs with you and if you can, make sure your devices are fully charged before leaving home!
