What to Expect On Race Across The World: The Experience

A brief outline of what to expect when you participate in Race Across The World: The Experience!

Still haven’t given Race Across The World: The Experience a try yet? That’s ok, there’s still plenty of time to get your team’s name up there on the leaderboard!

What to Expect On Race Across The World: The Experience

If you’re wondering how on Earth we’ve transformed the hit BBC TV show, Race Across The World, into an experience and you want to know what’s ahead of you, keep reading.

We’ll take you through all the details (without giving away any spoilers!), and we’ll even let you in on some recent statistics…

Here’s what to expect on Race Across The World: The Experience, and remember: your race, your choices.

Preparing For The Race

All players who want to participate in Race Across The World: The Experience need their own ticket.

There are multiple time slots available daily at different price points. This is done so that as many teams as possible can participate in the race without getting in each other’s way, and also so that we don’t overwhelm our systems and partner venues (more about them later).

NB: Only people who have turned 18 years old may purchase tickets. Tickets are available for children above the age of 10. Kids under 10 play for free with a paying adult. If you need carer tickets or have any queries, please reach out to us!

Starting The Race

Once you’ve set up your teams, you’ll be directed to your start location.

As soon as you get there, send “START”. You will then receive directions for a nearby venue where you’ll collect your race pack. This is your real starting location and first checkpoint.

Start locations are dynamic and different for all teams, because if hundreds of players descended on one pub, bar or cafe, there’d be mayhem.

The race experience isn’t a simulation of the real world, it is the real world! Everyone else will be going about their daily lives so queues, construction, and huge groups of tourists are part and parcel. We spread everyone out so it’s a smoother start for all!

Budget, Spend & Save

At the start of the race, your team will have £30 virtual, in-game credit. This is your budget, and you’ll need to use it to buy directions from characters who you’ll communicate with through WhatsApp.

All the characters are capable of giving you directions, but the way they convey them varies depending on their price. Remember, if the price seems too good to be true, then take it as a clue!

If you splurge your budget on a leg, don’t despair, you can always “work” to top it back up again. You’ll have to take on extra, cryptic puzzles, but it could be worth it if you’re hoping to make up time!

Reaching Checkpoints

Just like the start location, checkpoint venues vary from team to team. This time however, they’re determined by your in-game choices.

All teams visit three checkpoints throughout the race. Once you reach a checkpoint, the timer pauses and you’ll be able to take a break. Take as long as you need here (and make the most of those exclusive discounts, too!).

You’ll also pick up physical puzzles at these checkpoints, and you’ll have to solve them before you know where the race is going to take you next!

Getting Competitive

Race Across The World: The Experience has been designed to be flexible. That means that you can play it pretty much however you want to: competitively, just for fun, or a nice blend of both.

Teams must consist of a minimum of 2 players and a maximum of 8 players, but how you race is up to you.

Competitive players can either split into smaller teams (e.g. 2 vs 2, 4 vs 4, 8 vs 8, etc) and race against friends, family, or colleagues on an internal leaderboard, or you can stick together as one team and race against the overall leaderboard.

At each checkpoint, you’ll see how your rival teams are doing and where your team fits on the leaderboard. Obviously, if you don’t want to play competitively, just ignore the other teams!

Winning The Race

Here’s a question we get quite a lot: can you win Race Across The World: The Experience?

Yes, you can! We’ll probably annoy you by saying that we think your team’s a winner if you enjoyed yourselves, that’s the main goal and the one we take the most seriously.

But if you’re asking about really winning the race?

We have got an article about 6 “mistakes” some teams make during the experience if you want to check that out, but we’ll give you some good, general advice first.

Your final score will be determined by your race time and your final budget. The time you spend relaxing at checkpoints gets deducted, but we factor all of your game choices before you’re rewarded an accolade. Just some food for thought…
